Personalization is a huge challenge for marketers today. Most of us are collecting data on our prospects and customers, but the problem is that there is so much of it and it’s all stored in different systems. This creates a big headache when it comes time to create that super relevant email content. Gartner even stated that 80% of marketers will abandon personalization by 2025 because of these difficulties. But you don’t have to be one of them! Personalization is still one of the best ways to squeeze more ROI out of your email program. In a survey conducted by Mailcharts of 500 retail brands’ emails, only 1.5% of those had personalization in the subject line. That is dismal, especially considering that subject line personalization is just the bare minimum of what you can and should be doing with personalization. To really get the most out of your personalization efforts,…

What is Customer Engagement? Although it is also relevant to physical stores and trade, the term “customer engagement” only really emerged with the rise of eCommerce. Now customer engagement has become a buzzword. So, let’s get down to basics… What does the phrase “customer engagement” really mean? Here’s a definition we can work with as a starting point: Customer engagement describes all interactions between a brand and an individual. Customer engagement refers to maximizing the engagement a customer has with a brand. A business will offer a form of engagement and the customer can select where, how, and when to interact with it. This is the significant difference with other forms of marketing: The consumer is actively choosing the time, place, and channel for the conversation. The goal is to create meaningful interactions between brand and customer. And it is the company’s job to interact in a meaningful, hyper-personalized manner. Customer engagement marketing should always be a…
Whether you’re a solopreneur or a small business, the likelihood is you have to manage a number of clients and all that relates to them (invoices, emails, orders, contracts, etc.). This can get messy quickly, especially if you have to share this information with other members of your team. Don’t get me wrong, I love the old pen and post-it combo, but there comes a time when one needs a little more organization in one’s life! And that is exactly what a good customer relationship management (CRM) software can offer you. It might not sound very exciting, but you’ll be surprised just how dynamic these tools can be, with colorful drag and drop pipelines and notifications of ‘hot’ leads. In fact, the days of boring gray databases are buried in the past (together with Nokia phones, Windows Vista and dial-up modems). And what’s more, you can now get access to…

A lot of folks are talking about Apple’s recent announcement about building privacy protection into email. I have somewhat stayed out of the conversation and I’m not sure what I really think about it. This is a change to how a lot of folks use email and no one really likes change. I actually have a post I’ve been quietly working on talking about open rates. From my perspective, they’re an increasingly useless metric for deliverability and too many senders put too much emphasis on them and they’re not telling us what we think they’re telling us. I might work a little bit more on that, but at this point it kinda feels moot given Apple’s new announcement. I do have some thoughts and opinions on the Apple change but I’m still thinking about it and looking at the longer term implications. I know there’s a rush to be the…
Apple has announced the latest changes to iOS 15, which will block open tracking in the email. This will come as a shock to many email marketers. And while it may not be the most popular opinion, but I am actually excited! “In the Mail app, Mail Privacy Protection stops senders from using invisible pixels to collect information about the user. The new feature helps users prevent senders from knowing when they open an email and masks their IP address so it can’t be linked to other online activity or used to determine their location.” – Apple Press Release June 7 How will this affect you? Your Email Open Rate reporting will be less accurate. Globally, the Apple Mail app represents around 11% of email users. You should still do an analysis on your customer population, but you can assume that 11% of email opens…
