Sometimes these practices can verge on illegality. In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) dished out a record $245m fine for video game developer, Epic Games, as part of a wider settlement over “dark patterns” — manipulative marketing practices designed to trick Fortnite players into unwanted purchases.
