Yes, I do have various Google alerts set up watching for food-related spam articles. Or SPAM, in this case! Without those alerts, I wouldn’t have stumbled across this deliciously described spam fried rice recipe courtesy of the Recipe Critic. A simple combination of pan-fried spam, fluffy rice, eggs, and veggies, it seems very much like your typical fried rice recipe, but the addition of the diced, salty SPAM luncheon meat kicks things up a notch and this one is going on my “gotta try this” list immediately. If you’re suffering from DMARC-related malaise, perhaps this will help you forget about it for a few minutes. For absolutely no useful business reason, I share with you a cover of Feel Good Inc. (originally performed by Gorillaz) being played on a (number of) Stylophones. This makes me smile and I hope it does the same for you. Thanks, maromaro1337, whoever you are!
For absolutely no good reason at all, here’s the video for the song “Sabotage” from the Beastie Boys. This is a single from their 1994 album, “Ill Communication” with an absolutely bonkers Spike Jonez-directed video. Enjoy.
Perhaps this is yet another reason why email isn’t dead just yet. Licensed from Work Chronicles.
German Youtuber Matthias Schwarzer takes us on a trip to the birthplace of one of the most famous photos of all time. One we’ve all seen a billion times, but never really thought much about: The photo that became the default desktop background image in Windows XP. Remember that meadow? Of course you do. We all do. Where was it, how did the photo come to be, and what does it look like now? Matthias explains.
Yum! Is it as delicious as it looks? Alas, we likely will never know, as it it is not real. It’s SMEAT, the fake prop meat product originally created for the movie Waterworld and later re-used in many, many other TV shows and movies.Thankfully, there’s a website where you can learn more about SMEAT: smeat.net. And where did I get this glorious screen capture? From this Youtube video: Adam Savage’s Tested: What’s Wrong With These Products? There’s fun to be had here, whether you’re a fan of movies, graphic design, or just spiced ham and pork products. Hopefully all of the above, like me. Please enjoy.Come to think of it, if the cans of SMEAT were originally made as props for a movie released in 1995, that means that they were probably created in 1994, and if they started out life as real cans of SPAM, and if those cans
There’s a guy named Jason Pargin (originally writing under a pseudonym) who wrote a book back in 2007 called “John Dies at the End.” I don’t know how to describe it — “comic horror” is a label I’ve seen applied to it, and I guess that works as well as any other. It’s about a couple of guys who live in a dying rust belt down and end up dealing with some, well, weird stuff. Monsters and mayhem in a mundane setting, maybe?Since then there have been more books in the series: This Book is Full of Spiders, What the Hell Did I Just Read, and the most recent one, which I just finished a week ago, called If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe (purchase link here). If you’re looking for something somewhere between supernatural and sci fi, comedy and horror — with protagonists just trying to pay the
This one is painful. Please allow me to share this pain with you: A Ray Charles/Nickleback mashup. Sure, why not. I believe the technical term is “abomination.”
For my Friday fun post today, I’m sharing with you a Wisconsin Public Radio story featuring an interview with my friend Wendy Wimmer, talking about her family and history and her wonderful new debut short-story collection, “Entry Level.” It starts with a bit of a “cubical life” sensitivity, and takes a turn into the fantastic. Check it out! And then go buy the book.My favorite quote from the interview: “The story ended before the talking marine animals showed up.”
All this talk of AI lately got me thinking back to the days of Max Headroom, given that he was … almost a pioneer in the realm of computers pretending to be human. Yeah, it was all fake, just a guy in make up, pretending to be AI. But it was pretty cool for 1986. I think. So for this week’s Friday time waster, allow me to present to you: The Art of Noise with Max Headroom – Paranoimia (Official Video). Enjoy.
