The poop emoji has been in the news a lot lately, thanks to Elon Musk setting up an auto-response to any emails sent to Twitter’s press contact address that contains nothing but the swirling brown icon. Don’t believe me? Email press@twitter.com and see for yourself. But that’s “only the tip of a brown iceberg,” as it seems to have gotten Sarah Jeong thinking, how do the courts handle the poop emoji? How often does the poop emoji show up in filings? She’ll answer this and more over on the Verge. She also quotes law professor (and long time privacy/internet/email/spam legal expert) Eric Goldman, and it turns out that he published a whole paper on “Emojis and the Law.” I didn’t know this existed yet I am so glad it does. Eric helps us understand the very real concerns about encoding and compatibility, how intellectual property concerns around emoji art can negatively impact
The other day I was at the corner bar. I guess I’m enough of a regular to have been given the secret main wifi password, so as not to have to try to get by on the slower guest wifi network. While sitting at the bar with my wife, I noticed that the bartender had opened the SONOS app on a tablet behind the bar (oh, what modern times we live in) to fire up a background music playlist, and that, of course, got me thinking. I have a SONOS stereo at home and I’m familiar with the app, and I’m on the bar’s wifi, which means I can pull up a Cocteau Twins playlist on Spotify without anyone knowing. And so I did. I did eventually confess to my sin, as I don’t want any hurt feelings, but we did share an enjoyable walk down memory lane there for
It’s Friday! Let’s get silly. Here’s musician Dustin Ballard, aka “There I Ruined It” with his best effort to compile a song entirely out of singers saying “Yeah.” Here’s a link, if the embed doesn’t work. Enjoy.
Hey, as the weekend approaches, why don’t we celebrate the life of Trugoy from De La Soul, who passed away recently, by listening to the group’s fun song “A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays.” Enjoy.
A friend of mine posted about going to see the bands Charlatans UK and Ride here in Chicago a few days ago. It made me jealous and got me thinking about Ride, a band I used to really enjoy back in the 1990s. Here’s their single “Leave Them All Behind” from their 1992 album “Going Blank Again.” Shoegazing at its finest! Enjoy.
The weekend is almost here. Might it be time to become….lazy? David Byrne can relate.
I can’t wait….for the weekend! Here’s Nu Shooz, from 1986. Hey fellow graphic nerds, doesn’t this video just scream Quantel Paintbox/Quantel Harry? Doesn’t hurt that the tune is very much a catchy one, either. Enjoy.
Another week is drawing to a close, and I think that means it’s time for another music break. If Katy Perry doesn’t make you want to get up and dance, you might be dead inside. Enjoy!Thank you to Denise Miller for the suggestion!
It’s been a long week. Let’s get weird. The song: “Frontier Psychiatrist” by the Avalanches. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on here, but it’s a fun collage of sound.
As we wind things down for the long holiday weekend here in the USA, please allow me to say thank you, friends, for reading and subscribing! Please enjoy “Thank You Friends” by Big Star, a woefully underrated rock band that more people should know about.
