DNS provides a hierarchical relationship between Internet domains. The organizational domain concept complements this by identifying the top-level or shortest domain that is still within a given organization. For instance Example Corp operates the domain example.com, and uses the sub-domains mail.example.com and news.products.example.com to send email to their customers. The organizational domain for both of these sub-domains would be example.com, because this is the shortest domain that remains within the same organization as mail.example.com and news.products.example.com.
