use of certain mathematical techniques to show that the “signed” object has a relationship with the signer, e.g. that an email message was approved by the sender. For DomainKeys or DKIM this would mean a header in the message that can be checked against a key published under the signing domain in the DNS. In a secure messaging system like S/MIME it would be a wrapper for the message that can be verified using the public key certificate of the sender.
